Hi,
I finally decided to get my emax veneers with minimal prep - my dentist took impressions of my original teeth made a exocad design of my new teeth and got a 3 model printed of my new teeth
To see how the new teeth will appear in my mouth the dentist used temporary enamel wax like material to transfer the 3d printed model to my teeth and after taking pics and making sure that I was ok with the new shape of my teeth he removed the temporary material from my teeth
Now the next step is to prep my teeth - but he informs me that we need to set the temporary 3d model again on my teeth before prepping them so that my actual teeth are minimally prepped - my common sense tells me that we should not prep after coating them with the temp wax material rather he should prep my naked teeth without coating them with the temporary material
Is there any reason why its better to prep on the teeth coated with the temp material as they will finally appear with the veneers rather than prepping my naked teeth as they are ?
Thanks
Prepping teeth on top of temporaries can save time but risks uneven margins, inadequate isolation, or compromised accuracy. Careful planning, proper stabilization, and adequate temporary thickness are essential for success.
It sounds like your dentist is taking great care to ensure you’re happy with the final result—using a 3D model and temporary material is a fantastic way to visualize the outcome! When I got my veneers, my dentist also applied a temporary mock-up before prepping my teeth. They explained that this process helps guide the preparation to match the exact dimensions and contours needed for the veneers, ensuring minimal enamel removal while achieving the best fit and aesthetic. It felt strange at first, but the results were worth it!
